You’re in Rome when

You see stone pines towering over monumental ruins

Stone Pine Colosseum
Stone Pine trees are everywhere in Rome. Colosseum in the centre background- as seen from the Palatine Hill

The old survives with the new

Stones Old and New
This is shot from the entrace to Roma Termini railway station. You may look at it and say “ok that’s a wall”. Right. But that wall is the Servian Wall which was built in the 4th Century BC and it has existed for more than 2300 years.

You see the Victor Emmanuel monument all the time

Victor Immanuel Monument
Altare della Patria- Although an impressive monument, it is not always a favourite with the locals. It has variously been called a wedding cake, typewriter, dentures and so on. Because it is a building of garish white marble in a place where every other building a warm colour of sand. BUT if you think back to Roman times- every building was fronted with white marble or something that gave that effect so in that sense the Altare della Patria is completely in keeping with the spirit of the place.

You see as many gulls as people

Rome and Gulls
There are probably as many gulls as tourists in Rome. And in keeping with my last point see the Victor Emmanuel monument in the background

When even the airport coffee rocks

Rome Airport Espresso
Rome is so awesome that even the espresso they serve you at the airport stand up cafe bar is out of this world.
