Of all the places I travelled to last year, I found myself returning in my thoughts to Budapest. There was something endearing and charming about that city- I’m not sure if it was because of its bohemian feel or if it was because the city with its river and bridges and hills and ornate monuments and Parisian cafes was just spectacularly beautiful.
One of the first monuments I visited in the city was the Szent Istvan Basilica (St Stephen). Although the church is named after Stephen the first king of Hungary (though originally it was about to be called St Leopold), the building itself was constructed only in the 19th century on a site where a theatre existed previously. Apart from its monumental proportions, one of the nice things about the basilica is being able to climb right up to the top of the dome to get breathtaking views of the city. There are a total of 364 stairs to climb up.
