Climb every mountain

I guess I’m old enough to have belonged to a generation that grew up listening to songs from movies like ‘The Sound of Music’. Songs in these musicals must have shaped the lives and dreams of millions of people in the same way that music continues to mould and shape lives and aspirations these days- different music, different dreams.

Although almost every song in ‘The Sound of Music’ was hummable, memorable and lovable, I think ‘Climb every mountain’ sung by the Abbess to Maria is probably the one song that inspired countless people to go on when they wanted to give up. I don’t normally burst into song but during my recent trek to Ladakh (already a month ago and I haven’t written a thing about it yet) I walked through a landscape that inspired me to sing ‘Climb every mountain’. I’m posting a picture that I took on my phone and you can see what I mean.

Climb Every Mountain Ladakhmed
A landscape that can inspire a thousand songs

Of course ‘Climb every mountain’ is not only for when you actually go trekking- it’s more for every day situations when you feel like giving up but need to carry on for what you believe in and what is right.

Over the last few days my admiration for people who stand up for no personal gain for the rights of those who cannot stand up for themselves-including animals has deepened. We have a constantly rumbling problem with a few neighbours who would like to chase away the few community cats we feed – they call them a nuisance and a health hazard. We ask them to look at facts and have some compassion. But the constant negativity, the constant veiled abuse takes a toll on you. And this is not even intense abuse- so I try to imagine what the activists (not just the animal rights activist but anyone who is against a dominant majority for what is morally right) on the field must be facing day in and day out. Yet for what they believe is right- they will go out there once again and face abuse all over again.

May they always have the strength to carry on and the rest of us should take a leaf out of their books and strive for what we believe in

Climb every mountain,
Search high and low,
Follow every byway,
Every path you know.

Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
‘Till you find your dream.

A dream that will need
All the love you can give,
Every day of your life
For as long as you live.

Climb every mountain 2 med res
Until you find your dream keep climbing

  3. I grew up on Sound of Music, so it is quite important to me. I saw it live for the first time November of 2015. Sound of Music is one of the best musicals.

      1. Seeing it live for the first time in 2015 was quite special. A musical I have loved since elementary school, that time I became a bigger fan of the musical since my emotional connection grew as I actually watched. I felt like a kid watching this musical live. So the younger musicals, which belongs to elementary school to summer of 2006, those laid the foundation for musicals
