Weekly Photo Challenge: Evanescent

I’m taking part in the weekly photo challenge after what must be eons. This week’s theme is ‘Evanescent’. Evanescent is one of those words whose meaning I well understand but would have trouble explaining to someone if asked. So here’s one of the definitions of the word I found online:
“soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing.”
which seems very close to ephemeral which is “lasting for a very short time.”

However, the difference seems to be that the things that are ephemeral have a very short lifespan but something that is evanescent is just disappearing quickly. So something that is not ephemeral could be evanescent- you could have a long summer but as it gets close to fall, the warmth of summer could be evanescent.

I won’t ramble any further but leave you with my photograph which I guess is a combination of something that’s both ephemeral and evanescent. The wildflower has reached its peak and you already see that it is fading away at the edges. Within a day it will have all faded.

Thank you so much! Truth be said I could not find much motivation to be regular on my blog this last year. Hopefully this has changed now and I will start posting again regularly!

Beautiful interpretation of two words that sound the same and have similar meanings (and both can be hard to pronounce…try saying both words one after another fast, and repeat…), and your beautiful macro flower shot captures both sentiments perfectly. It’s ephemeral because it lasts a season. Evanescent because the way it look is constantly changing and fading away, those petals dropping off at some point after full bloom. Very creatively done. Love this post 🙂
