S for Sanchi

Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, India,  is the site of multiple Buddhist stupas. This includes the Great Stupa commissioned by Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya dynasty in the 3rd century BCE. The stupa was modified in the ensuing generations and highly decorated gateways were added in the 1st Century BCE.

Any student who grows up studying history in Indian schools learns about the Sanchi stupas at a very young age. It was my privilege earlier this year to visit Sanchi. The day of my visit was a cold and foggy day unfortunately and some of my pictures did not turn out to be as sharp as I would have liked. It was still a wonderful experience.
