Daytrip Ideas from Kochi, Kerala: Houseboat in the Backwaters

There is something about Kerala- something in the air that immediately relaxes you and makes you feel like you’ve left all your cares behind you. The feeling is only amplified as you sit in a non-motorised boat that is made to quietly skim across the backwaters by an experienced set of rowers.

If you’ve got a day or even half a day at Kochi and you do not know what to do with your time, you’ve got to go on a backwater trip. It takes about a 70 minute drive to get to the nearest backwater and from there you are taken on a 3 hour journey where you sit back in your cane chair on the long boat, close your eyes and just breathe. And make sure you choose a non-motorised option- the motorised ones make a lot of noise, give you a headache and just ruin the entire experience anyway.

There are a lot of tour operators who do this tour. We chose Indoworld tours and they charged us just Rs 850 per person (that’s less than USD 15) to pick us up from our hotel in Fort Kochi, drive for more than an hour, take us on the boat for 3 hours and bring us back to Kochi. A steal deal if I’ve ever seen anything. I wouldn’t have grudged them 3 times that amount for the same experience.

Matthias- this was my first time just relaxing at the backwaters and it was just fantastic. I so want to go there again! I wish I could just buy one of those houses by the river and just move in there!

  2. You are absolutely right, Sukanya 🙂

May be because it’s my native, still I used to feel it every time I come back home from Bangalore, the fresh air and soothing feel in the ambiance 🙂

So nice to see these images 🙂
