Maitreya- Thikse Monastery

Continuing on the theme of Buddhism that I talked about in my last blog post, I would like to talk a bit more about my visit to Thikse Monastery which we visited on our road from Leh to Lake Pangong.

Standing Tall at 49 feet

Thikse’s main attraction is a 49 feet statue of Maitreya- a Buddha who is foretold to exist in the future according to Buddhist doctrine which also mentions that he would be the next Buddha after Gautama (who was the only Buddha I knew for the longest ever time).

Details of the Ear Ornament

Thikse’s statue of Maitreya was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 1970 and is one of the largest statues of Maitreya in Ladakh. It took four years for this statue to be crafted.
