Where the Sky and Water Touch

I was fascinated by the converging reflections of two of the most spectacular man made structures in Singapore in this pool- the art and science museum in the foreground and the Marina Bay Sands tower with its ship-like structure supported by 3 pillar blocks.

The leaves of the lilies in the pool somehow bring in a sense of realism to the two soaring structures that could be something out of pure fantasy.

How much plainer would our lives be if life were filled with structures that were just functional. We would find lesser ostentation and ornamentation if man didn’t have the urge to make a statement- the same urge which made the cavemen draw paintings on the walls of their dwellings, the same instinct which makes people carve their names on an old tree.

Another City, Another Eye

I feel that man-made objects are always wonderful subjects for photographs. A structure that has been designed and constructed by man (at least in these times) has a certain safe order about it- a pattern or should I say a symmetry- that is not available in nature (at a macro level- at the micro level it is said that all is symmetrical). A range of mountains- impressive though it may be could never appear as symmetrically appealing and yet imposing as does this ferris wheel.

Rose Ringed Parakeet

I had been trying to photograph a group of shy parakeets that kept running away when suddenly this bird came and perched itself awkwardly on the coconut tree for a few seconds offering me a valuable opportunity to capture it in all its glory.

Elephants Swimming Across the Lake

The Elephants were making their way from one side of the forest reserve through the water to the other. Although they continued for the major part unmolested, there suddenly appeared a boat full of tourists very close to the elephants. Quite annoying!

Scurrying Elephants

The Elephants reach the shore and scurry away to cover in the bamboo forest.

And yet to witness a free elephant in the wild- to come across the sheer size and scale of the magnificent creature in a bamboo forest is breathtakingly beautiful.

Although from a far distance, I was lucky enough, one early morning in Kabini to witness a herd of elephants. In the beginning it just looked as though the herd had come for a casual drink of water, and that the first few elephants were just dipping their feet in the lake. Imagine our surprise when one by one the elephants kept walking into the lake (right down to the small calf) and started swimming to the adjoining shore- all the time maintaining a disciplined straight line. Apparently elephants are great swimmers- who knew!!

Out for a quick swim

I shot the photograph from a distance of almost 1-1.5 kms so the elephants look small- like babies. However most of them were full grown. Just the scale of the trees on the bank amazes me!

2011 brought me in close range with peafowl. In addition to their wonderful plumage I discovered that I loved to hear the call of the peacock as well. It is a bit haunting- and although most people whom I know hate it, it tugs at my heartstrings.

I also discovered that peahens hang out together. I wonder what they discuss when they’re together.

This photograph was shot at Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh. The adult and young langur seem serene and unshaken in this photograph. Calmly observing the string of safari jeeps regularly making their way through twisted paths in the forest.
